BMW has unveiled the seventh iteration of the M5, featuring an innovative M Hybrid powertrain that combines a twin-turbo V8 engine with a single electric motor seamlessly integrated into the ZF automatic transmission. Alongside this, the G99 M5 is expected to hit the market in November 2024, marking the global launch of the sedan. BMW’s nomenclature distinguishes the four-door sedan as simply the Sedan, while the wagon variant is known as the ‘Touring’. The upcoming M5 Touring will be the third in the lineup, following the E34 with its inline-six engine and the E61 with a V10.

The new M5 boasts a total output of 717 horsepower from 5,600 to 6,500 rpm and 1,000 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 5,400 rpm. For those opting for the M Driver’s Package, the top speed can be increased to 305 km/h. The V8 engine alone produces 577 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, while the electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission contributes an additional 194 horsepower and 280 Nm, with effective torque pre-gearing reaching 450 Nm.

    Rapid Sprint 0-100kmph

A critical observation concerns the acceleration metrics provided in these press releases. Specifically, the G90 M5's estimated 0 to 100kmph time of 3.4 seconds is notably slower than its predecessor, the F90 M5, which achieves 3.2 seconds in its base form, 3.1 seconds in the Competition version, and 2.9 seconds for the CS variant. This discrepancy points to the increased curb weight of the G90, which BMW lists at 2,445 kilograms for the US market and slightly less for Europe.

BMW’s press releases for both the US and European markets highlight that the plug-in hybrid twin-turbo V8 setup is "derived from [the> BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racer." However, this statement is somewhat misleading. The racing prototype utilizes a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 designed exclusively for motorsport, differing from the series-production 4.4L twin-turbo V8. Additionally, the hybrid system in the race car includes standardized components from Williams, Bosch, and Xtrac.
