There are 3 variants of the MG 5 on sale currently. The standard trim costs AED 47,874. Then there’s the 1.5-liter Com variant, one that costs AED 53,933. Finally, the top-of-the-line 1.5-liter Lux variant retails for AED 61,610. 

Which is the most value-for-money variant? 

We think the Com variant retailing for AED 53,933 makes enough sense for most people to buy and that is the variant we recommend the most. So if you are in the market for one, the middle variant is what we recommend. That said, if you are on a very tight budget, even the base variant makes a lot of sense so you can go for it too. 

What features does the MG 5 get?

The MG 5 is reasonably spacious for a proper sedan. While seating 5 people will be a bit of a task, it’s quite comfortable for 4 people even with a fair bit of luggage. So if touring is what you intend to do with your MG 5, you sure can, but of course with 4 or fewer people. 

What engine & transmission options are available?

Everything under the bonnet of every variant of the MG 5 can be stated to be protected by a sturdy 1.5-liter engine that gives the car a torque that stands at 150 Nm. This much power is sufficient for city commuting as well as for long journeys, thus making the car highly functional and practical for most of the driving conditions. This is backed by an engine that is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) which gives the vehicle a top speed of 180 km/h. 

Based on the model, you do get an electronic power steering or speed-sensing power steering which is meant to enhance the control as well as response of the car. Furthermore, all the trims apart from the base model have a push button start ensuring that you are ready to start the next adventure with the least effort.

What’s the mileage of the MG 5?

As for the fuel economy, the MG 5 delivers approximately 9 km per liter of petrol. Yes, it’s not a lot but MG cars have always been in the news for being fuel guzzlers and the MG 5 is no exception. Being a new generation car like the MG Hector, there are concerns we have had about fuel efficiency and the MG 5 does not perform better in this area either.

How safe is the MG 5?

Some of the features that are exhibited by the vehicle include a 3600 camera view which gives the driver a view of all the angles and directions hence avoiding a blind spot. Some of the standard features include Hill Start Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, and Curve Brake Control. Should you buy the MG 5?

Driving the MG 5 was a surprisingly enjoyable experience in many ways, while in others, it met our expectations precisely. The turbo-petrol engine combined with the dual-clutch transmission could use some refinement, especially when navigating at lower speeds, where it occasionally felt less smooth. 

The problems stated above were less critical than the overall drive experience. The lack of obtrusive driver assistance features made driving a little more fun and something that many will be glad about. The new MG 5 is quite sleek looking with an interior that provides comfort and the car is quite stable while on the road. 

Even if it lacks some of the newest safety systems and can be an annoyance in crawling traffic, it continues to be a highly attractive offer for those, who decide that the driving pleasure and the car’s reasonable price are the most important characteristics of the vehicle. Despite the few drawbacks though, the MG 5 has much to be content with as you will learn from the following review.

What are my alternatives? 

If the MG 5 still doesn’t float your boat, we recommend you have a look at its rivals instead. For starters, you can get the Maruti Dzire or even the older Baleno, both of which have proven to be extremely reliable cars, more than the MG. You could even consider the Tata Tigor instead, a car that has proven to be a no-nonsense, sweet car that is feature-packed and is reasonably good for everyone in your family.
