The Corolla Cross does offer a bit more rear-seat room compared to the Corolla Hatchback and significantly increases cargo space by over 12 cubic feet. 

While the lower trims are more basic, the XLE trim enhances the interior with faux-leather upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a flip-down center armrest for rear passengers.

The interior of the Corolla Cross carries a utilitarian vibe from the outside in, featuring a polyurethane steering wheel and hard door panels. This no-frills approach is common among entry-level SUVs.

The Corolla Cross offers both traditional gasoline and hybrid powertrains, but this review focuses on the gasoline version. It features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 169 horsepower and 203 Nm of torque, paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). 

On this car, Front-wheel drive is something that’s standard and all-wheel drive is optional. In initial test drives, the acceleration felt sluggish and the engine was noisy at high revs. Our all-wheel-drive test vehicle recorded a 9.2-second 0-100 kmph time, which is slightly better than its main rival, the 2024 Honda HR-V. 

However, the ride quality is smooth, appealing to those who prioritize comfort. The hybrid version, on the other hand, achieves a faster 0-100 kmph time of 7.3 seconds.

What’s the mileage of the Toyota Corolla Cross?

The 2024 Corolla Cross has an EPA fuel economy rating of 13 kmpl in the city and 14 kmpl on the highway. Opting for the all-wheel drive reduces these figures slightly to 12.3 kmpl and 13.6 kmpl, respectively. In our highway fuel-economy test, the all-wheel-drive model returned 12.75 kmpl.

If budget allows, the GX Hybrid is highly recommended. It offers significant improvements in efficiency and refinement for a $2500 premium, along with better resale value thanks to its 2.0-liter petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain. The only downside is the potential long wait times for this model.

Alternatively, the new Hyundai Kona is worth considering. It offers both petrol and hybrid options at a similar price point, with competitive practicality and technology features. Its more dynamic design might appeal to those seeking a bit more flair, and it may also have shorter wait times compared to the Corolla Cross.
