What features does the BMW X2 get?
An expansive and svelte digital display system is fitted to every BMW X2. A section of 10.3 inches plays the role of the instrument cluster, showing essential details regarding the speed and fuel levels, while a neighboring screen of 10.7 inches is devoted to handling the infotainment system. Both screens are coated behind a seamless curved glass panel for an overall clean and sleek look for the dashboard.
The X2 will have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless compatibility across all trims. Your smartphone experience will be very integrated. With the M35i xDrive, you'll get this standard or it's one of the Convenience package add-on bits if you opt for the xDrive28i model. If you are enjoying a rich sound that gives the ride fantastic, then you would want the Harman Kardon sound system. This is available with the Premium package, and it gives a punch to your playlist.
How spacious is it?
The interior of the latest X2 shares its design cues with the more boxy X1, though with a slight compromise in headroom and cargo capacity. Its design ethos leans toward modernity and elegance, with a strong emphasis on technology. A floating center console not only divides the front seats but also houses a toggle switch for the gear selector, making the cabin feel clean and futuristic.
Beneath the console is a sizable cubby that can easily accommodate small bags or other items, while a convenient bin located at the base of the dashboard is perfect for keeping your smartphone within reach. In select models, this space doubles as a wireless charging pad. If you're driving the sportier M35i variant, the cabin gets an athletic makeover, with the option of sport seats wrapped in leather or a combination of leather and faux suede.
What powertrain options are available?
The BMW X2 xDrive28i comes with a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four, which produces 241 horsepower with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Where the desire for greater adrenalin lies, the M35i xDrive brings an altogether different variant of the same engine to a more concerning level of performance by beefing up the internals and raising turbo pressure, making for a serious 312 horsepower. But both suffer the telling defect of a noticeable lag in turbo response, slight momentary delay before the turbine boost kicks in when you stomp on the accelerator.
Both also come with standard all-wheel drive and all-season tires but the M35i takes it up a notch with 20-inch wheels. Oddly enough, both versions are electronically capped at 130 mph when shod in all-season tires. However, those who want to specify performance summer tires for the M35i raise the top speed to 155 mph.
In terms of handling, the M35i offers an even more engaging driving dynamic, though the cornering grip is a bit middling even with summer tires. Steering is precise and could match even the most ardent enthusiast's want level of feedback.
What’s the mileage of the BMW X2?
The most fuel-efficient version of the X2 is the xDrive28i, the EPA rates that car at 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Even the more potent M35i xDrive is actually pretty efficient, estimates only falling 1 mpg on city and highway.
Of course, the best way to determine true highway fuel economy is to test in real-world conditions, so we put the xDrive28i to the test at 75 mph. It ended up doing better than its rating at an impressive 35 mpg.
How safe is the BMW X2?
On par with many rival models, the BMW X2 boasts a respectable list of standard driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking. If you want even safer technology, you can add further extras; this is what BMW gives to those who need more intelligent safety support.
1) It is equipped with standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
2) It is also provided with the standard lane-departure warning
3) The adaptive cruise control with center-lane ability is optional.
How many color options are there?
The BMW X2 comes in 10 colorways: Alpine White Solid, Black Sapphire Metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Portimao Blue Metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Pure Gray Metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Storm Bay Metallic, Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Cape York Grey Metallic, M Portimao Blue, Fire Red Metallic, and Skyscraper Gray Metallic.
Should you buy the BMW X2?
The new X2 is a bit of a conundrum. On paper, it ticks all the right boxes—it's stylish, packed with tech, and offers a choice between a comfortable daily driver and a more performance-oriented variant. But in reality, the M35i we tested just didn’t live up to expectations. The design may be subjective, but the real letdown was the driving experience, which felt somewhat uninspired. It's surprising, considering BMW's reputation for making cars that excel in dynamics.
While the X2 is by no means a bad vehicle, it doesn’t feel like BMW invested much passion into this model. Oddly enough, the all-electric iX2 offers a more compelling proposition, benefiting from BMW’s growing expertise in electric vehicles, though even that lacks the spark we’ve come to expect from the brand. In the end, the X2 feels like a rare misstep in BMW’s lineup—a decent option, but not the standout it could have been.
What are my alternatives?
If the BMW X2 doesn’t sound like your thing, you could first consider the Mercedes-Benz GLA instead, a car that has a much better road presence and will turn heads wherever you take it. Then there is the Volvo XC40, a car that is fast and packs incredible performance. Finally, even the Lexus UX is a good option to consider instead of the BMW X2, a car that comes with great built quality and Lexus’ badging. If you want something from Range Rover, you could even think of the Land Rover Evoque.
