Suzuki Jimny To Be Discontinued In Europe Soon!

SAUDI ARABIA : Suzuki is all set to discontinue the much-loved 3-door Jimny in the European market and the production of this off-roader will stop next year. This has essentially been because of the Jimny’s sales figures, which have been on the lower side.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Why is Suzuki discontinuing the 3-door Jimny in Europe?

Due to low sales figures and failure to meet increasingly stringent European emission standards.
  • What are the CO2 emission levels of the European version of the Jimny?

154g/km with the manual transmission and 170g/km with the automatic transmission, exceeding the required 95g/km fleet average.
    • Another reason for Jimny’s discontinuation is the emission norms, which are getting stricter by the day.
    • The current Jimny’s carbon dioxide levels are much higher than the average.
    • It has also been reported that Suzuki will soon be focusing on electric vehicles a lot more than ICE ones.

Suzuki has announced its decision to cease sales of the Jimny in Europe, a move driven by increasingly stringent European emission standards. This change, revealed a few years back, will see the Jimny replaced by newer models, primarily Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), in Suzuki's European lineup.

The European version of the Jimny was equipped with Suzuki's K15B 1.5-liter petrol engine, paired with either a 5-speed manual or an automatic transmission. Despite its compact size, the 3-door Jimny SUV emits relatively high CO2 levels—154g/km with the manual and 170g/km with the automatic—exceeding the 95g/km fleet average required by European regulations. This discrepancy led to Suzuki discontinuing the Jimny as a passenger vehicle in Europe in 2021.

Currently, the Jimny is marketed as an N1 category commercial vehicle with two seats in many European countries. While still available in some regions, Suzuki has halted new orders in most markets, with a few exceptions such as Germany. As a final offering, Suzuki introduced the Jimny Horizon edition in select areas, limited to 900 units. This special edition features a unique paint scheme, distinctive graphics, and additional exclusive elements, and it is based on the commercial two-seater variant of the Jimny.

    Reasons for the Discontinuation

The primary reason for discontinuing the Jimny in Europe is the continent's increasingly strict emission regulations. In the UK, for instance, Suzuki attributed the decision to the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which requires manufacturers to progressively increase the proportion of EVs sold over the next decade, according to Autocar UK. The mandate starts at 22 percent in 2024, rising to 28 percent in 2025, and reaching 80 percent by 2030. Manufacturers face a penalty of GBP 15,000 (approximately Rs 16 lakh) for each internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sold above the allowed limit.

    Upcoming Suzuki EVs

To compensate for the CO2 emissions of its current lineup, Suzuki plans to introduce more electric vehicles to the European market. The company is set to launch the eVX electric SUV next year and has also announced plans for an all-electric Jimny, which will debut in Europe.

Although the sale of the 3-door Jimny will cease in Europe, the model will continue to be available in both 3-door and 5-door versions in other markets. Despite its slow sales, Suzuki has managed to distribute the Jimny to various left-hand and right-hand drive markets, exporting over 35,000 units to date.
