How many variants are there in the Mazda CX9?

The CX9 is on sale in 3 variants: 2.5T GS AWD, 2.5T GT AWD, and 2.5T Ignite Edition. The first and second variants cost AED 121,000 and AED 136,500, while the top-of-the-line trim will set you back by AED 160,500. To sum it up, the CX9 is a reasonably value-for-money car and the prices are not exorbitant or even unreasonable. 

Which is the most value-for-money variant? 

We think the top variant of the Mazda CX9 makes a lot of sense. For less than AED 40,000 extra, you are getting a special edition of the car, while not losing out on all-wheel drive, meaning it’s just as capable as any other trim. So if you can extend your budget just that little bit and get the Ignite Edition, we think you should go for it. 

What features does the Mazda CX9 get? 

The CX9 has a wide dashboard along with a long console. The best thing is just how simple it feels. The console might be long but it’s right in the middle of the dash, making it quite easy to use for both the driver and the passenger. While it may not have all the latest tech, it is enough for it to feel quite modern and apt for a car being sold in 2024. 

Something that car enthusiasts will love though, are the analog dials. There is a big analog speedometer in the middle along with an analog tachometer, both of which give proper old-school vibes, something that we loved. Apart from that, the leather quality and finish levels feel on par and nothing feels cheap or flimsy in this rugged-looking car. 

How spacious is it? 

The CX9 is known for its size and the upside to that is the sheer space on offer. You can travel with your family and luggage and you still won’t feel the need for more space. The boot is quite big and so are the seats, meaning everyone will be extremely comfortable in the car. 

The highlight has to be the sheer knee room on offer, especially for the passengers behind. So even if you have passengers who are on the taller side, they should be very comfortable even with a relatively tall driver. 

What powertrain options are available?

The CX9’s engine makes a solid 345PS along with 500 Nm of peak torque. The best thing about this mill is just how torquey it feels and there is a lot of oomph right from the word go. That makes it extremely easy when taking this behemoth off-roading because all you have to do is get on the pedal a bit and the car gets going. Add to that the electric motor that makes about 150 Nm more and it means you have a lot of power right from idle. 

The best thing is that the car gets an all-wheel drive system as standard in all variants, so even if you are on a tight budget and opt for the base variant, you still will not miss out on a lot of the off-road cred this car is famous for. Add to that the Dynamic Pressure Turbo system and it means that you will have a lot of drive even when out on highways, doing high speeds. In short, this is an engine that we’ve all loved, quite a bit. 

What’s the mileage of the Mazda CX9?

You can expect a mileage of around 8 kmpl in the city with the Mazda CX9. Out on the highway, on the other hand, you should be able to get a bit over 10 kmpl. But if you’re expecting anything more than that, it’ll be very hard to extract from this big engine. 

How safe is the Mazda CX9?

The Mazda CX9 has the basic safety features and while it doesn’t have the latest tech for 2024, we think the tech on offer is just fine. Lane keep assist, driver attention detection, cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot radar, electronic stability control, and much more, this car has the basics sorted out so at no point will you feel unsafe or lacking, in terms of safety features. 

How many color options are there?

The Mazda CX9 is on sale in 9 colorways: maroon, white, red, silver, dark gray, light white, matte silver, black, and blue. Of these, our favorite has to be the red colorway, since it makes the SUV look quite nice. But if you want something more subtle, you can always opt for the subtle and sleek black paint scheme. 

Should you buy the Mazda CX9?

If you are looking for a proper old-school experience in 2024, the Mazda CX9 is a great choice. It looks big and old-school, has similar tech and the overall experience is that of driving a chilled-out but capable car. 

While it does not offer on-the-edge excitement, it is plenty capable, and more mature riders will enjoy it. But if you want something that feels very hi-tech with all the latest gizmos, you might want to look elsewhere, since the CX9 does not offer that sort of a driving experience. 

What are my alternatives? 

The Mazda CX9’s direct rival has to be the Honda Pilot, a car known for its incredible reliability, given the Honda badge. So if that is of utmost importance for you, we recommend the Honda over the Mazda. Then there is also the Toyota Highlander, a car known for its incredible off-road prowess. And finally, you can also have a look at the Ford Explorer, a car known for its incredible road presence as well as off-roading capabilities.
