Volkswagen Tharu XR Unveiled In China

SAUDI ARABIA : Volkswagen has introduced the Tharu XR SUV, which is currently exclusive to the Chinese market. This new model is an extended version of the Taigun, which is available in many global markets. The Tharu XR boasts a roomy five-seat interior and is equipped with a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine. It also incorporates design cues from Volkswagen’s latest SUV lineup.

Built on the MQB A0 platform—the same foundation used for the Taigun, Kushaq, Slavia, and Virtus —the Tharu XR maintains a 2651mm wheelbase like its siblings. However, it extends an additional 134mm, bringing its total length to 4,355mm.

Design and Styling

In terms of design, the Tharu XR borrows several elements from the Taigun, including the doors and most body panels. Nonetheless, it distinguishes itself with newly styled headlamps, a reimagined grille, and a redesigned front bumper. The rear of the Tharu XR features dark-tinted, connected tail-lamps with transparent lenses, imparting a more premium look. 

Engine and Interior

The Tharu XR will be powered by a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine, available in various states of tune. Although Volkswagen has not yet detailed the Tharu XR’s interior, it is expected to be similar to the Taigun’s cabin, albeit with some cosmetic updates and additional features. There is still uncertainty about whether the Tharu XR will offer an increased boot capacity as a five-seater or if it will include an extra row of seats to accommodate six or seven passengers.

Market Availability

For now, the Tharu XR will be available solely in China, with no plans of launching this SUV in markets other than China. Volkswagen continues to expand its SUV lineup with models like the ID.7 GTX, which features a 340hp all-wheel-drive setup. 

Strategic Market Adaptation

The introduction of the Tharu XR underscores Volkswagen’s strategy of tailoring models to different markets. The design improvements and spacious cabin of the Tharu XR are intended to attract consumers who value both style and practicality. So if a style statement is what you intend to make, the Tharu XR SUV sounds like quite a good deal, at least for now. 

The launch of the Tharu XR in China is a significant step in Volkswagen’s broader initiative to bolster its presence in key markets around the globe.
