Nissan’s R32 GT-R is a legendary performance car, loved by enthusiasts worldwide. But with a future where gasoline may become scarce, one team of dedicated Nissan engineers is ensuring this iconic model can live on. Their passion project, the R32 EV, transforms the GT-R into an electric powerhouse while staying true to its original driving excitement.

A Passionate Vision

This project is led by Nissan EV engineer Ryozo Hiraku, a lifelong fan of the R32 GT-R. He questioned whether enthusiasts could still enjoy this car in 30 years and decided to explore electrification. The goal was not to surpass the original GT-R’s performance, but to match it using EV technology.

Powertrain Transformation

To replace the R32 GT-R’s legendary 2.6L twin-turbo engine, the team installed two 160kW electric motors, delivering a combined 340 Nm of torque. A 62kWh battery pack from the LEAF NISMO RC02 was placed in the rear seat area. While the R32 EV is 370 kg heavier, engineers tuned its power-to-weight ratio to mirror the original GT-R’s performance.

Engineering Enhancements

To handle the added weight and maintain sharp handling, the R32 EV features:

• NISMO Sports Suspension with Öhlins dampers to improve stability.
• Bigger brakes from the R35 GT-R for enhanced stopping power.
• Factory-inspired 18-inch wheels, designed to fit the larger brake components.

Driving Experience: More Than Just Speed

The R32 GT-R was never just about raw power—it was about a balanced and engaging drive. The team focused on preserving this experience:

• AWD system refinement: The original ATTESA E-TS system gave the R32 excellent traction. The EV version’s twin motors distribute torque more precisely, improving handling.
• Paddle shifters and simulated gear changes: To maintain the feel of a manual transmission, engineers added shift logic that mimics clutch engagement.
• Engine sound simulation: A cabin speaker replicates the RB26DETT’s legendary exhaust note, ensuring drivers feel connected to the car.

Inside the Cabin: Classic Yet Modern

Nissan kept the interior as original as possible, with a few modern upgrades:

• Custom Recaro seats for improved comfort and support.
• High-resolution digital screens for gauges and driver info, keeping the classic R32 GT-R layout intact.

A Master’s Input

Before final tuning, Nissan’s master test driver Hiroyoshi Kato, who helped develop the original R32 GT-R, tested the EV version. His feedback is now guiding further refinements to ensure the R32 EV stays true to its roots.

What’s Next?

While there are no plans to sell the R32 EV or offer conversion kits, the insights gained from this project will help Nissan shape future EV development. For now, this one-off creation stands as a tribute to innovation and passion, proving that classic cars and electric power can coexist.
