Bugatti will unveil its new V16 hypercar on June 20

SAUDI ARABIA : Bugatti is set to unveil its next hypercar, powered by a naturally aspirated hybrid V16, on June 20. According to the brand, this next-generation model will feature a unique design inspired by the legendary Type 57 SC Atlantic, Type 41 Royale, and Type 35 models. These classic cars have lent their DNA to create a pure and authentic reinterpretation of the Bugatti identity, as highlighted in the press release.Following the farewell to the famed W16 engine with the Chiron Super Sport L’Ultime, Bugatti showcased the V16 engine's shape, layout, and its powerful sound. CEO Mate Rimac provided additional insights during an interview at the Financial Times Future of the Car conference in London.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is so unique about Bugatti's new V16 hypercar?

The next Bugatti model represents the V16 engine's historic comeback to production automobiles, a feat not seen since the 1991 Cizeta-Moroder V16T.
  • Unlike the W16, which utilized four turbochargers, the V16 will operate without forced induction. Rimac mentioned that this colossal engine measures one meter in length—400mm longer than the Chiron’s four-bank unit. Despite integrating a substantial electric drivetrain, the car will maintain a similar shape to its predecessor. Rimac described the exterior as an evolution, retaining distinct Bugatti design elements.

Spy photos suggest that the new hypercar will have a familiar silhouette but will be slightly lower and sleeker than the Chiron. The car’s design was finalized early last year under Achim Anscheidt, Bugatti's former design chief. Anscheidt noted that the new model will propel Bugatti into a new era while preserving signature features like the horseshoe grille and crescent-shaped beltline.

BugattiHis successor, Frank Heyl, promised that the new hypercar will surpass the Chiron in terms of proportions, technology, innovation, and unexpected elements, aiming to astonish and delight.Rimac, renowned for his work on electric hypercars and battery technology, was instrumental in realizing the V16 project. He revealed that before his company acquired Bugatti from the Volkswagen Group, the plan was to create an electric coupé-SUV. Although a rebadged version of the Rimac Nevera could have been a logical electric successor to the Chiron, it was crucial to differentiate the two brands and honor Bugatti’s heritage.

Rimac emphasized that while high power figures could be achieved with a highly turbocharged V8, the emotional and special experience provided by the V16 is what makes it a true Bugatti.

The new Bugatti will be the first production car in decades to feature a V16 engine, the last being the ultra-rare Cizeta-Moroder V16T in 1991. Although Bugatti has not disclosed specific details about the engine, various reports suggest it has an 8.3-liter capacity, possibly developed by Cosworth. Neither Bugatti nor Cosworth has confirmed these details.

Describing its first hybrid powertrain, Bugatti stated that it embodies the brand’s DNA and is created not just for the present or future, but 'Pour l’éternité'—for eternity. Initially, it was speculated that Bugatti would downsize its engine to accommodate the hybrid system’s electric components. However, the firm has managed to stay true to its 16-cylinder lineage while embracing electrification. It remains unclear whether the hybrid system will allow for engine-off operation or if the two power systems will work together for maximum output.
